This morning on the radio I heard an interview with Helen. She had been the rink maker in a local community. She was asked if she had known how to do it when she accepted the task and she said not one bit. You would think that you just pour water on it. But of coarse it is a little more complex then that. Particularly if you want to get good at it and get complements. It take thin layers. Many of them. It takes time and care and snow removal. You need to plan it out. Pay attention to the environment. Patience and persistence. You need to clear the edge and fill the holes. She enjoyed the kids waiting at the boards anticipating the rewards of good ice. Quitting smoking is a lot like laying ice. You think it is a simple as just stop buying them. But of coarse it is a little more complex then that.
