Quitting is not easy and no one should have to do it alone. Getting support from others is one of the most important things you can do to ensure a successful quit. Here are some tips on building support.

Having a support network to help you through your decision to quit smoking is one of the most important things you can do. Lean on those around you, learn from the community forum and put some of the ideas below into action.

  • Let your family and friends know about your plans. They can help with words of encouragement, giving you extra space, and doing little things to relieve your stress. If they are smokers, ask them not to smoke around you for the first little while.
  • A quit buddy is someone you can depend on when you're craving a smoke, feeling down or just need to vent. A quit buddy can be anyone – a family member, friend, co-worker, or even someone you've met through the AlbertaQuits forum. The person doesn't have to be an ex-smoker, since all that really matters is that he/she will be there for you to provide regular and non-judgmental support.
  • If you are considering using stop smoking medications, doctors and pharmacists can provide advice on what products are best for you. If you are being treated for any physical or mental health issues, it is especially important to talk to your doctor before taking any new medications.
